Nintendo Switch 2 game prices are collapsing across the United States. Costco is currently selling first-party Switch 2 titles like Pokemon Legends ZA, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, and Kirby Air Riders for just $29.97... a 57% discount on games that launched less than six months ago. But Costco isn't the only retailer slashing prices. Woot has been offering discounts on games like Mario Kart World and Animal Crossing New Horizons Switch 2 Edition for months, and Nintendo themselves just launched a Spotlight Sale on the eShop with third-party Switch 2 games discounted by up to 50%. When you line up every price cut on a timeline, a clear pattern emerges... and it points to a serious demand problem for Switch 2 software in western markets.

Nintendo's own financial data confirms the issue. Through three quarters, the Switch 2 has sold 37.93 million software units across 17.37 million consoles: an attach rate of just 2.18 games per system over nine months. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors in February that overseas Switch 2 sales were "somewhat weaker than expected," while Japanese sales exceeded projections. Shortly after, Bloomberg reported that Nintendo cut Switch 2 production by over 30%, and Nintendo announced that starting May 2026, digital first-party Switch 2 games would carry a lower MSRP than physical copies... a pricing structure the company has never used before.

It's no secret that Nintendo's stock price has plunged in the year since they've released the Switch 2, despite their new console having a stellar launch and strong, if slow, holiday sales numbers. Current economic conditions have made the Switch 2 even mor expensive to produce than before, and Nintendo has so far been eating the extra cost, which in turn has been eating into their profits. But can a price hike really be beneficial for Nintendo? Should they hold the line with price in hopes that software sales pick up the slack? And has it really worked out for Sony and Microsoft, who have also raised their hardware prices in the five years since the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S have launched? Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 will be going up in price globally, with Nintendo Switch Online also receiving a price hike in Japan.

Hardware price revisions are effective from 25th May 2026 in Japan and 1st September in Western markets. Nintendo states that the changes are due to "changes in market conditions" and the "global business outlook".

"We sincerely apologize for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders, and we deeply appreciate your understanding."

The changes affect all Switch models in Japan, but only Switch 2 in the West. So without further ado, here are the hardware pricing changes: Nintendo Switch 2 will price increase starting September 1st:

United States: $449.99 - $499.99
Canada: $629.99 - $679.99
Europe: €469.99 - €499.99
Japan (May 25): ¥49,980 - ¥59,980 (multi-language system unchanged)

Switch (Japan), NSO (Japan/South Korea) & Playing Cards (Japan) also get increases
Metroid Prime 4 has still not appeared in any of Nintendo's financial sales reports.

Sadly that means it did not reach over 1 million units sold on Switch or 1 million units sold on Switch 2 in the past fiscal year. Nintendo will raise the price of Switch 2 globally and expects to sell 3m fewer units consoles in the next financial year as a result. In the US, the Switch 2 console price will rise by $50. The firm will also increase the subscription price of Nintendo Switch Online.
